Montessori Meets EYFS

We don't choose one approach. We combine two.

Montessorigives children the “how” of learning: curiosity, independence, concentration. EYFSgives them the “what”: ensuring every developmental milestone is met.

The activities are set up in a way that children are learning without realising they're learning. It's fun.

What is Montessori?

Developed by Dr Maria Montessori over 120 years ago, the Montessori method is built on a simple discovery: children learn best when they're free to explore at their own pace.

Instead of a teacher directing from the front, children choose activities in a carefully prepared environment. The teacher observes and guides, supporting each child's natural curiosity.

“I genuinely believe in the philosophy of follow the child. I've seen how it helps children develop not just academically but life skills, problem solving, independence, out of the box thinking.”

Five Areas of Montessori Education

Your child explores all five, developing a complete foundation for lifelong learning.

Practical Life

Pouring, threading, buttoning, sweeping. These activities build concentration, coordination, and independence.

Sensorial

Pink towers, colour tablets, and sound cylinders develop cognitive precision through sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste.

Language

Sandpaper letters and the moveable alphabet develop phonemic awareness and storytelling through hands-on exploration.

Mathematics

Number rods, golden beads, and bead chains let children physically hold quantities. They understand maths because they've held it.

Culture

Geography, science, history, art, and music. Children explore globes, maps, nature trays, and cultural artefacts.

Why Montessori Works

Stronger Independence

Children make choices, solve problems, and take care of themselves from the earliest age.

Better Concentration

Long uninterrupted work periods develop attention spans that last a lifetime.

Greater Social Skills

Mixed-age environments teach empathy, cooperation, and leadership naturally.

A Love of Learning

When children choose their own activities, learning becomes joyful, not a chore.

School Readiness

Strong literacy, numeracy, and social foundations for a smooth transition to reception.

Self-Regulation

Children learn to manage emotions, wait their turn, and respect others’ work.

“Montessori children are out-of-the-box thinkers. They're problem solvers, they're confident, they're creative.”

Montessori Questions, Answered

The Montessori method was developed by Dr Maria Montessori in the early 1900s. Children learn by choosing their own activities in a carefully prepared environment, guided (not directed) by trained teachers. The focus is on hands-on discovery, independence, and respecting each child’s natural pace.

Child-led learning means children choose what they work on and for how long. As Evonne explains: "You set up a purposeful environment where the child is given the skills to explore, and everything they come into contact with encourages and develops their learning." The teacher observes and guides, stepping in when needed.

Research consistently shows Montessori children develop stronger independence, better concentration, greater social skills, and a genuine love of learning. As Evonne puts it: "Montessori children are out-of-the-box thinkers. They’re problem solvers, they’re confident, they’re creative."

Montessori builds confidence through real accomplishment. When children pour their own water, tidy their own workspace, and solve problems themselves, they develop genuine self-belief. "Montessori builds confidence in children in that it instils an independence where children then feel, I can do this by myself," says Evonne.

Montessori is a child-led educational philosophy focused on independence and discovery. EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) is the UK government framework ensuring children progress across seven developmental areas. At Buckingham, we combine both: Montessori gives children the “how” of learning, while EYFS gives them the “what”.

Montessori children develop concentration, self-regulation, social awareness, and a genuine interest in learning. They can sit and focus, work independently, collaborate with peers, and approach new challenges with confidence.

Montessori education works from birth onwards. At Buckingham Montessori, we welcome children from 3 months to 5 years. Our rooms are designed for different developmental stages, with Montessori materials appropriate for each age group.

Responsibility is built into daily life. Children care for their environment, prepare their own snacks, and look after younger peers. These aren’t chores — they’re opportunities for children to contribute meaningfully and develop self-reliance.

A classroom designed specifically for children. Every shelf, material, and piece of furniture is intentionally placed. Materials are at child height, grouped by curriculum area, and arranged from simple to complex. The environment itself teaches.

Montessori works for all children because it meets each child where they are. Active children thrive with the freedom to move. Quiet children find calm focus with individual work. As Evonne says: "Come and have a look, just come and see us in action." A visit is the best way to find out.

Our teachers plan activities that fulfil EYFS learning goals through Montessori methods. A practical life pouring exercise develops physical skills (EYFS), while sensorial work with colour tablets builds understanding of the world (EYFS). Children get the full Montessori experience within a framework that ensures no area of development is missed.
